AVS Media Player is a tool that tries to go beyond the designated role of a one-type media player and incorporate different kinds of formats and media types to be played while using it.
The program has a very simple interface that can be used to access and play any supported file format. You can access the settings menu, adjust viewing modes, select and open files in folders. The primary target is, naturally, video, with AVI, MPEG, WMV, MP4, DVR-MS, MKV, FLV, OGG and various others, more rare and unique formats fully supported. Then there's the audio playback, differing in functionality from video only in that the visual playback window is absent or empty in specific viewing modes. Supported audio formats include WAV, MP3, FLAC, M4A, OGG, AAC, AMR, etc. Special mention should go to the player's flexible sound system settings. It can work with 3.1, 5.1 and 7.1 speaker setup, easily switching between configurations.
What I found especially amusing is that AVS Media Player supports image viewing - a feature many would call completely unnecessary. Still, it has its uses, supporting BMP, GIF, JPEG variations, PNG, TIFF, PCX, RAS, PSD, WMF, TGA, EMG and several others. The image viewing capabilities of the player are surprisingly good.
All in all, AVS Media Player is competent, stable and, most of all, useful.
